As with any medical procedure, preparing for a vasectomy is crucial for ensuring a smooth and successful experience. A vasectomy is a safe, effective, and permanent form of contraception, and preparing for the procedure can help reduce anxiety and discomfort. Here are some steps you can take to prepare for your vasectomy procedure:
Dr. Read will provide specific pre-operative instructions to follow in the days leading up to your vasectomy. These may include fasting requirements or medication restrictions. Make sure to follow these instructions carefully to ensure the best possible outcome for your procedure.
To achieve optimal visibility of the surgical area and for hygienic reasons, we recommend that you shave your scrotum, the base of your penis and your pubic area at least two days prior to surgery.
On the day of your vasectomy, please ensure that you have a clean groin and scrotum area. It is important that you wear supportive underwear to your procedure appointment, and comfortable, loose-fitting clothing is strongly recommended.
If you are receiving sedation medication, please avoid all food and fluid for four hours prior to your scheduled procedure time. You will also need to arrange for someone to drive you home after your procedure. Alternatively, we can accompany you into an Uber to taxi. Most men will opt to receive sedation for its relaxant effect and to ensure a more comfortable experience.
Immediately prior to the procedure, the doctor will administer the intravenous sedation (should you choose to receive it), pain medication and local anaesthetic to ensure you are comfortable and to minimise discomfort during and after the vasectomy. The procedure itself takes about 20 minutes, however this can vary depending on your anatomy.
After the procedure, you will need to take it easy for a few days to allow for proper healing. Make sure to arrange for post-operative care, such as having someone to assist with household tasks or child care. You may also want to take time off work to allow for proper rest and recovery.
It is important to follow our instructions in order to encourage healing and a timely recovery. Key points include:
• Lie flat and avoid unnecessary activities on the day of the procedure. Apply intermittent cold compresses to the scrotal area on the first day.
• Continue to avoid unnecessary activity the day following your procedure.
• Paracetamol is best for pain relief. Do not take any anti-inflammatories such as Nurofen for 48 hours after surgery.
• Avoid alcohol for 48 hours after surgery.
• Continue to avoid heavy lifting and strenuous activity for 7-10 days post-procedure.
• Showering can be resumed the day after surgery. Swimming is permitted after 48 hours.
• It is advisable to refrain from driving and signing legal documents for 24 hours after receiving sedation.
• Refrain from intercourse and ejaculating for one week.
• You will be given a pathology request form for a semen check to be performed no sooner than three (3) months after the procedure. Further checks may be required if the semen specimen is not yet sperm-free. An alternative method of contraception must continue until you are advised of a clear specimen.
In conclusion, preparing for a vasectomy is an important step in ensuring a successful and comfortable procedure. By following these steps, you can prepare yourself physically and mentally for the procedure and reduce any anxiety or discomfort.
