Vasectomy: potential short-term side effects

Vasectomy blog post gold coast southport Dr Michael Read

If you are considering a vasectomy but are worried about the possible side effects, this article is for you!

Most men know what is involved in a vasectomy, however let’s start with a quick recap of the procedure.

What is a vasectomy?

Vasectomy is a minor surgical procedure for birth control. It is the most common permanent solution men and couples choose to avoid pregnancy.

Vasectomy involves blocking the passage of sperm from the testes. Sperm makes up only a small portion of semen. Men do not see any difference to the appearance of ejaculated fluid.

Vasectomy is safe, effective and often reversible but it is important you are confident you want permanent contraception.

What are the potential short term side effects?

The main short-term side effects of vasectomy to consider are :

  • Scrotal discomfort usually requiring no pain relief or paracetamol. Occasionally the pain can be more significant and there are effective stronger medications.
  • Infection can occur with symptoms of fever, redness and swelling.
  • Bleeding inside the scrotum happens seldom. Skin bruising is more frequent but harmless.
  • Swelling in the scrotum, testes and adjacent structures can occur, but this usually settles quickly.

In Summary

You can generally expect your vasectomy to go well and provide safe long term protection against pregnancy. There are potential risks with all surgery that can be mitigated with surgical care and by following post-operative advice. Dr Read will discuss these matters prior to your operation.
