Here at Dr Michael Read’s practice, Dr Michael Read offers a no scalpel (keyhole) vasectomy. This type of procedure is the preferred technique as there is a low risk for complications and there is no need for stitches post the procedure.
Before undergoing the procedure, an initial consultation with Dr Read will be organised where he will discuss the procedure as well as ensuring that you are a suitable candidate for this procedure.
The no scalpel vasectomy is performed by exposing the sperm carrying tubes – known as the vas deferens tube. A small incision is made to the scrotal skin and a small amount of the vas deferens tube is removed. Once removed, the end of the tube that is closest to the body is sealed. This prevents any more sperm from travelling through the tubes.
Although some patients in the past have driven themselves home after the procedure, if sedation has been given, it is recommended that you have someone drive you home
Once you get home, Dr Read recommends you lie down and apply regular icepacks.
The typical recovery period is around 2 to 3 days and depending on your occupation, you can usually return to work after the recovery period. However, if your job requires any heavy work or lifting you should wait until around 7 to 10 days post-procedure to return to work.
